Omsk, is Siberia's second largest city (after Novosibirsk) and one of Russia's most important. Today, an Omsk visit is one of the highlights of a trip on the Trans-Siberian Railway for its attractive 19th century centre and its numerous cultural opportunities. Moreover, literature lovers will find much of interest in Omsk, as it was Dostoevsky's home during the majority of his exile from Saint Petersburg, where he found his faith in Russian Orthodoxy.

Location: Omsk is the capital of Omsk Oblast, Siberia, and is a regional hub for Western Siberia and the Altai mountains in Russia, as well as northern Kazakhstan.

Brief History:

1716 - Omsk was founded. Prior to the fall of Imperial Russia, Omsk was the administrative capital and largest city of Siberia.
1918-1919 - Admiral Kolchak of the anti-Soviet White Army chose Omsk as his base and "capital of Russia", largely due to its strategic importance as the gateway on the Trans-Siberian Railway to Siberia and the Far East. Following the capture of the region by the Bolsheviks, the administrative capital of Siberia was moved to the Soviet-favored industrial city of Novosibirsk.

Getting There: By train: The southern and northern branches of the Trans-Siberian Railway converge here, so a multitude of trains arrive from Moscow (40 hrs) and Far Eastern Russia (4-5 days) daily.
By air: Several air companies fly to Moscow daily (3 hrs). Less frequent flights connect to Saint Petersburg (3 hrs), Krasnoyarsk (2 hrs), as well as Frankfurt, Hannover, Köln in Germany (5 hrs).
