Brief History:

1201 – the city was founded by Germans and was under the supervising of the German Teutonic order.
In the end of XIII century the confederation of small feudal states was incorporated in the important association of Baltic and North Sea commercial towns – Hanseatic league, and the important center of the occident Baltic region had been created.
1997 – the ancient part of the town was declared the “Patrimony of the Humanity” by UNESCO.
